An acrobatic & brightly colored bird of lowland and foothill forests. Adults are a powdery gray-blue overall with blue highlights on the wings and tail with the face and sides tinged soft gray-brown. They vary considerably over range with birds in southern Southeast Asian portion of range being very gray, lacking bright colors.

The Near Threatened Mrs. Hume's pheasant, also known as Hume's pheasant or the bar-tailed pheasant, is a large, dashingly plumaged, long-tailed terrestrial forest pheasant. The male has a chestnut body, steely blue neck & wing patches, white wing bars, and a long black-and-white banded tail. The brownish female is shorter-tailed, with black-spotted upperparts and red facial patch. They are usually found singly, in pairs, or in trios in forest openings, meadows, and along rural roadsides, typically in the early morning.

It was a pleasant morning with a nice breeze & beautiful diffused light. We were photographing the Ultramarine Flycatcher when I noticed a small warbler foraging in a mimosa tree in the background. I took a few photos and was pleasantly surprised to see that it was a Tickell’s/Alpine Leaf Warbler, a very rare bird in Thailand! The Olive-backed is a small pipit with a greenish-brown back and heavily streaked breast & belly that is often seen in loose flocks or in pairs. Note the distinctive facial pattern: broad pale lines surrounding the eye and a dark ear patch. It prefers more forested areas than other pipits, though will also forage in fields and scrubby edges.
