Ruby-cheeked Sunbird

The Ruby-cheeked (Chalcoparia singalensis) is a tiny sunbird with a short sharp bill. The male’s metallic green upperparts, wine-red cheeks, and bright orange throat and chest are unmistakable. The female is less distinctive, but note her size, bill shape, and bright orange throat. Found in forests, forest edges, and gardens from lowlands up into hilly areas, typically foraging actively in upper levels of trees.

Green-tailed Sunbird

An endemic race of the Green-tailed Sunbird completely confined to the summit of Doi Inthanon.

The Green-tailed Sunbird’s species name is technically accurate, but the male’s bright greenish-blue head is much more noticeable than his tail. Also note his red upper back and bright yellow underparts. The female is olive-yellow with paler underparts and a greyish head. Note the lack of a strongly contrasting pale rump patch as compared to female Mrs. Gould’s Sunbird. The Green-tailed inhabits montane and hill forests and forest edge.
