Red Panda

The endangered and reclusive Red Panda has been a primary bucket list item for me for an excruciatingly long time. But with the help of Ismail Shariff - a great friend and like minded spirit - it finally boiled down to this, our maiden trip to these pristine forests - a dream come true. All my - I should say our - expectations were blown away with the monumental support of the team at Firefox Expeditions India led by Sourav Mondal and Amardeep Thami.

The beautiful Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens) is a carnivore native to the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China. It is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. It is slightly larger than a domestic cat albeit with a slightly longer body with a bear-like body and thick russet fur. The belly and limbs are black, and there are white markings on the side of the head and above its small eyes. It is arboreal and feeds mainly on bamboo, but also eats eggs, birds, and insects. A solitary animal, it is mainly active from dusk to dawn, and is largely sedentary during the day. It is also called the lesser panda, the red bear-cat, the red cat-bear, and the fire fox.

White-browed Bulbul

The seventh in the Bulbul series is the white-browed bulbul (Pycnonotus luteolus) a member of the bulbul family of passerine birds, a resident breeder in Sri Lanka and peninsular India. Largely olive coloured above with whitish underparts, it has a pale supercilium and a yellow vent. They are found in dense scrub habitats, where they skulk within vegetation and can be difficult to see although their loud and distinct burst of calls is distinctive.

Yellow-throated Bulbul

The sixth in the Bulbul series is the Vulnerable Yellow-throated Bulbul (Pycnonotus xantholaemus) - a species of songbird in the bulbul family of passerine birds. It is endemic to southern peninsular India. They are found on scrub habitats on steep, rocky hills many of which are threatened by granite quarrying. It is confusable only with the white-browed bulbul with which its range overlaps but is distinctively yellow on the head and throat apart from the yellow vent. The calls of this species are very similar to that of the white-browed bulbul.

This uncrested species of bulbul is olive grey above with a yellow throat, undertail coverts and tail tips. The head is plain while the breast and belly have a grey wash. The closest resembling species is the white-browed bulbul but this has a supercilium and lacks the yellow throat. Males and females are similar in plumage.

Indian White-eye/ Oriental White-eye

The Oriental white-eye (Zosterops palpebrosus) is a small passerine bird with yellowish olive upper parts, a white eye ring, yellow throat and vent in the white-eye family. It is a resident breeder in open woodland in tropical Asia, east from the Indian subcontinent to Southeast Asia, extending to Indonesia and Malaysia. Foraging in small groups, they feed on nectar and small insects. They are easily identified by the distinctive white eye-ring and overall yellowish upperparts. Several populations of this widespread species are named subspecies and some have distinctive variations in the extent and shades of yellows in their plumage.
