The Sambhar (Rusa unicolor) are a large deer species native to the Indian subcontinent, South China & SE Asia listed as a Vulnerable Species on the IUCN Red List since 2008. Sambar have many subspecies which vary in size and appearance, and it is known as the largest Oriental deer with some adult males reaching 550kg in weight. Their populations have declined substantially due to severe hunting, local insurgency, and industrial exploitation of habitat.

Sambar have a thick coat of long, coarse hair which forms a dense mane around the neck, especially in males. The males can be distinguished by their antlers, as well as being slightly larger and darker than females and young. The name is also spelled Sambur, Sambhar or Sambhur.

The Indian Fox or the Bengal Fox is endemic to the Indian subcontinent, except in the coastal regions & the Western Ghats. They are usually seen near agricultural areas and human settlements. Although known to be distributed throughout the subcontinent, their occurrence is based on factors such as prey availability. They have long, bushy tails with black tips, which distinguish them from the similar-looking Desert Fox. They are omnivorous opportunistic feeders and prey on insects as well as small mammals.

The nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus) (/ˈnilˌɡaɪ/, literally meaning "blue cow") is the largest antelope of Asia, and is ubiquitous across the northern Indian subcontinent. It is the sole member of the genus Boselaphus.

It is a sturdy thin-legged antelope, characterised by a sloping back, a deep neck with a white patch on the throat, a short crest of hair along the neck terminating in a tuft, and white facial spots. A column of pendant coarse hair hangs from the dewlap ridge below the white patch. Females and juveniles are orange to tawny while adult males have a bluish-grey coat and possess horns. Read on.

Malayan/ Asian Water Monitors are among the largest lizards in the world with a wide distribution. Varanus salvator (subspecies macromaculatus) are a common sight across parts of South and South-east Asia. Their coloration ranges from brown to black with orange, yellow or white spots or ocelli. Their heads are ventrally flattened with an elongated snout. Their tails are long and powerful and are used for swimming, fighting or hunting.

Noted for their audacious attacks on highly venomous snakes such as king cobras, the mongoose are any of nearly three dozen species of small bold predatory carnivores found mainly in Africa but also in southern Asia and southern Europe. The 33 species belong to 14 genera with the most common and probably best-known being the 10 species of the genus Herpestes, among which are the Egyptian mongoose, or ichneumon (H. ichneumon), of Africa and southern Europe and the Indian grey mongoose (H. edwardsii), made famous as Rikki-tikki-tavi in Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book.

The shy Chinkara or the Indian gazelle (Gazella bennettii), is a gazelle species native to Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan & India. The Lesser Mouse-deer, Lesser Malay Chevrotain, or Kanchil (Tragulus kanchil) is a species of even-toed ungulate in the family Tragulidae. This shy, diminutive, even-toed ungulate, measures less than 50 cm long from head to tail. It ekes a living on the floor of primary & secondary forests feeding on leaves, shoots, fruits and sometimes fungi & is mainly crepuscular (i.e. active early morning and late afternoon), but is sometimes nocturnal.
