Red Junglefowl

This “original chicken” is smaller than its domestic descendants, and is widespread throughout South & Southeast Asia and can also be found as an introduced species in many regions around the world (especially prevalent on many Pacific Islands, including Hawaii). In its introduced range and some areas of its native range it has interbred widely with feral and domestic chickens, producing intermediate hybrids. Many of these birds cannot be distinguished from genuine wild-type birds. Within native range calls are useful for ID: the wild male’s crowing is hoarse and choked off towards the end, unlike the loud, vibrant calls of the domestic rooster.

Black-and-Yellow Broadbill

The Eurylaimidae are a family of passerine birds that occur from the eastern Himalayas to Indonesia and the Philippines. These strikingly patterned broadbills of Asia are forest canopy birds, often revealed only by their throaty staccato calls. The Near Threatened Black-and-Yellow Broadbill (Eurylaimus ochromalus) is utterly unmistakable in its costume of black, white, yellow & pink. It has a wide, deep-based bill, typical of the broadbills, in bright blue. Forages at middle to high levels in lowland and hill forests, frequently moving with mixed-species flocks and sallying out from a perch. Song is disproportionately loud, a series of high-pitched coos that increases in pitch and speed, turning into a maddened series of loud whistles.

Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker

One of my first flowerpeckers - the male is brightly-coloured & the female is predominantly brown. This is a lowland species, often found in gardens with flowering and fruiting plants, particularly mistletoe. Often detected through its metallic ticking calls.

Spot-bellied Eagle Owl

The Spot-bellied Eagle-Owl (Ketupa nipalensis) also known as the forest eagle-owl is an immense and imposing owl of dense wet lowland and hill forests of the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia. The silver-gray adult is majestic, with a large yellow bill, black eyes, and sweeping sidewards-facing “horns.” The juvenile is much paler, almost white, with shorter tufts. It gives deep echoing hoots. It is primarily nocturnal, but will on occasion hunt by day; takes prey as large as small deer.

Puff-throated Babbler

The Puff-throated Babbler is a medium-sized babbler, often encountered foraging in noisy, lively flocks on or around the forest floor. It occurs from lowlands up into hilly and mountainous forests often spotted flipping leaves on the ground in foraging flocks.

Silver-breasted Broadbill

The Eurylaimidae are a family of passerine birds that occur from the eastern Himalayas to Indonesia and the Philippines. These strikingly patterned broadbills of Asia are forest canopy birds, often revealed only by their throaty staccato calls. The Silver-breasted Broadbill is a small quiet bird with a distinctly silky, smooth-feathered appearance. Pale below and warm soft brown above with a black crescent above the eye and a glossy blue patch on the dark wings. It usually moves around through the middle layers of foothill and montane forest and does not often join mixed-species foraging flocks, instead tending to stick to medium-sized groups of its own species.

Lesser Mouse-deer

The Lesser Mouse-deer, Lesser Malay Chevrotain, or Kanchil (Tragulus kanchil) is a species of even-toed ungulate in the family Tragulidae. This shy, diminutive, even-toed ungulate, measures less than 50 cm long from head to tail. It ekes a living on the floor of primary & secondary forests feeding on leaves, shoots, fruits and sometimes fungi & is mainly crepuscular (i.e. active early morning and late afternoon), but is sometimes nocturnal.
