Common Sandpiper

The Common Sandpiper (Actitis hypoleucos) is a small, migratory wader known for its constant head-and-tail bobbing motion. It breeds across Europe and Asia, wintering in warmer climes like Mokila, Telangana, and Sungei Buloh, Singapore.

Adaptable to both freshwater and coastal habitats, it forages for insects and invertebrates in shallow water and mud. A largely solitary bird during migration, the Common Sandpiper is a widespread species whose conservation depends on preserving the global network of wetlands it utilizes during its remarkable annual journey.

White-browed Scimitar Babbler

The Old World Babblers are a family of passerine birds diverse in size and coloration, characterised by soft fluffy plumage. These are birds of tropical areas, with the greatest variety in Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. This group is among those Old World bird families with the highest number of species still being discovered. Featured here is the White-browed Scimitar Babbler from Doi Luang in Chiang Mai.

It is a medium-sized babbler with a slightly decurved yellow bill. It usually forages low in the undergrowth, at middle levels, or on the ground, often in mixed flocks with other babblers and laughingthrushes. Found from the upper lowlands up into mountainous regions, where it inhabits forests with dense undergrowth, as well as shrubby edges and grassy areas. Repertoire is vast and includes whoops, rattles, and hooting. As with other scimitar-babblers, pairs duet with one another.

Oriental Skylark

A chunky brown songbird with a weak crest, typically found on the ground in open fields and meadows. Darker above than below, with fine black streaking on the chest and light chestnut ear coverts with dark border. Very similar to the Eurasian Skylark, with which it shares much of its range, but Oriental has buffy, not white, outer tail edges and trailing edge of wing. Breeding males “skylark,” singing a series of variable notes while hovering high above the territory.

Gray Heron

The Gray Heron (Ardea cinerea) is a long-legged wading bird of the heron family, Ardeidae, native throughout temperate Europe and Asia, and also parts of Africa. Generally quite common and conspicuous in wetland habitats from marshes and tidal flats to small ponds, ditches, and wet fields; nests colonially in tall trees. Mainly seen as singles or in small groups, standing quietly in or at the edge of water, less often hunting in fields. Plumage is mostly gray overall, with paler neck; the adult has white crown, black eyebrows, and a black shoulder patch. Like other herons and egrets, flies with neck pulled in to form a bulge.

Common Kingfisher

#Kingfishers are a family of small to medium-sized, brightly coloured birds in the order #Coraciiformes. They have a cosmopolitan distribution, with most species found in the tropical regions of Africa, Asia, and Oceania. The family contains 114 species and is divided into three subfamilies and 19 genera. I have been able to photograph a few of these across Asia Pacific with some coming quite easily and some coming after waiting for hours, damp and cold but worth every bit the wait. Featured here is the beautiful Common Kingfisher.
