An adaptable medium-sized songbird of open areas and a common sight as a familiar dark silhouette perched on wires, fences, or snags. Uniform black plumage flashes blue and green iridescence in favorable light. A pugnacious species, frequently chasing away larger birds with repeated dives and harsh chattering calls. A skilled mimic of other species, and a strong songster in general, delivering a wide range of pleasant fluty calls, harsh chattering, nasal notes, and high sharp whistles.

A small, compact white heron with relatively short yellow bill. More frequently seen in dry habitats than other egrets. In the breeding season, look for bright orange head and breast. Often gathers in flocks, frequently following cattle or tractors in fields.

Finding and photographing the Streaked Weaver (Ploceus manyar) is an exercise in exploring vibrant wetland ecosystems. Often overshadowed by the more common Baya Weaver, the Streaked Weaver is a resident species specialized in reedy habitats near water bodies. I found and photographed these weavers near the banks of the Godavari River. The massive Sri Ram Sagar Reservoir serves as a critical habitat for various bird species, especially during the monsoon and winter months.

The Plain Prinia is a common prinia with drab gray-brown plumage that varies in tone across its range. Note the pale, wide eyebrow and the long tail that appears as if it is loosely attached to the body. Common in various habitats, especially farms and wetlands, but avoids woodlands with a canopy. A somewhat bold species, it often skulks in the undergrowth but sings from exposed perches.

I explored some dark sky sites at Nirmal, in collaboration with HyTiCos, which could be leveraged for star gazing and astro photography. This location has spectacular naked eye visibility of some of the major constellations and is a prime location for Star Trails photography.
