The early morning mist hung heavy over the dense canopy of Chiang Mai’s evergreen rainforests, draping the ancient trees in a silver shroud. The forest floor was alive with the rustle of leaves, but nothing was visible through the thick green wall of ferns and bamboo thickets. Suddenly, a chaotic burst of sound shattered the silence—a chorus of raucous cackles, rhythmic whistles, and metallic twangs that echoed through the ravine. The Brown Fish Owl (Ketupa zeylonensis) is a typical owl from the family Strigidae. A huge bulky brown owl with a finely streaked breast, a plain face, and bright yellow eyes. Also note its dirty white “bib” and the heavy brow that gives it a moody demeanor. It inhabits waterside wooded areas from lowlands up into the mountains, feeding by dropping down into and wading around in creeks, lakes, and pools. Often gives deep echoing hoots, as well as various shrieks and higher-pitched hoots.

The Yellow-vented Flowerpecker is a tiny bird with a short, sharp bill and demonic red eyes. The namesake yellow vent is not as readily apparent as the golden-olive upperparts and the long black streaks on its snow-white breast and belly. Inhabits lowland and foothill forests, gardens, and edges. Like many other flowerpeckers, most readily found hanging around mistletoe.
